Aspect 4 of 5

AI pedagogy

AI has a planned place in teaching, learning and assessment, and pupils learn to use it safely, critically and ethically.

All five aspects

What leadership puts in place

Indicator 4.1What leadership puts in place

The curriculum plans where pupils learn about and with AI.

Levels

Not yet
The curriculum does not mention AI.
Acquire
A few subjects teach about AI, but there is no plan across the school.
Deepen
A plan shows where every year group learns about and with AI, mapped to an AI literacy framework.
Create
The school writes AI curriculum units that other schools adopt.

Evidence that counts

  • Curriculum maps showing AI content
  • Schemes of work with AI lessons
  • A mapping to the AILit learner framework

Indicator 4.2What leadership puts in place

Assessment is designed with AI in mind.

Levels

Not yet
Assessments have not been reviewed for AI.
Acquire
Teachers know some tasks can be done by AI, but tasks have not changed.
Deepen
Assessments are reviewed for AI and redesigned so they show what pupils can do.
Create
The school designs new kinds of assessment for an AI world and shares them with other schools.

Evidence that counts

  • A review of coursework and homework tasks for AI
  • Examples of redesigned tasks
  • Department minutes on assessment and AI

Legal requirements

  • JCQ: AI use in assessments (opens in a new tab)Teachers may accept only work that is the student's own. Any AI use must be acknowledged, with the tool and date, and students keep a record of prompts and outputs. Staff must not sign the authentication declaration if in doubt, must report suspected misuse, and must not use AI as the sole means of marking.

Indicator 4.3What leadership puts in place

Pupils are taught to use AI safely, critically and ethically.

Levels

Not yet
Pupils are not taught about using AI.
Acquire
Pupils hear about AI safety in one-off assemblies or lessons.
Deepen
Every year group is taught to use AI safely, critically and ethically, and learning is checked.
Create
Pupils teach each other and their families about using AI well.

Evidence that counts

  • Lessons on safe and critical AI use
  • Pupil work showing critical use of AI
  • A mapping to the AILit learner framework

What staff do

Indicator 4.4What staff do

Teachers use AI to plan and adapt lessons and check the quality.

Levels

Not yet
Teachers do not use AI for planning, or use it without checking.
Acquire
Some teachers use AI to plan, but quality checks vary.
Deepen
Most teachers use AI to plan and adapt lessons and check the result against what pupils need.
Create
Teachers build and share tested AI planning approaches within and beyond the school.

Evidence that counts

  • Lesson plans or resources made with AI and adapted by the teacher
  • Department guidance on planning with AI
  • Lesson observation notes

Indicator 4.5What staff do

Teachers guide pupils' use of AI in lessons.

Levels

Not yet
Pupils use AI in lessons without guidance, or not at all.
Acquire
Some teachers set AI tasks, but pupils get little guidance on how to use the tool well.
Deepen
Teachers model good AI use, set clear rules for each task and help pupils reflect on what AI gave them.
Create
Teachers design new AI-supported learning activities and share them with other schools.

Evidence that counts

  • Lesson plans with guided AI tasks
  • Pupil work showing how AI was used
  • Lesson observation notes

Indicator 4.6What staff do

AI is used appropriately to support pupils with SEND and EAL.

Levels

Not yet
AI is not used to support pupils with SEND or EAL, or is used without checks.
Acquire
A few staff use AI to adapt materials for pupils with SEND or EAL.
Deepen
Staff use approved AI tools to adapt support for pupils with SEND and EAL, with the SENCO's oversight.
Create
The school develops and shares approaches that improve outcomes for pupils with SEND and EAL.

Evidence that counts

  • Examples of materials adapted with AI
  • SENCO guidance on AI use
  • Feedback from pupils with SEND or EAL
